HEALTHY AND EQUITABLE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT

The Healthy and Equitable Development Project is a part of the University of Minnesota’s Resilient Communities Project and is funded by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota Center for Prevention. This interdisciplinary study will bring together perspectives from developers, planners, elected officials, architects, community leaders and more, with the intent of understanding where gaps and disconnects exist between sectors. It seeks to address issues of equity and health in suburban development which are understudied, with a specific focus on how we can build residential developments that support active living, including the ability to walk, bike and bus to parks, jobs, community centers, schools, and grocery stores. Because people of color and low-income people are more likely to rely on walking, biking, and bussing than other Minnesotans, equitable suburban developments must support safe, comfortable access to these key amenities by means other than driving.
